One move: take out the floors at the back of the house and let a single lit stair connect everything.
The house had the proportions of a much grander building and the circulation of a much smaller one. We removed a service core and put all the effort into one stair.
The copper was left to patinate from the first day. Hands will polish the rail and the shadows will darken, so the stair will look different in ten years, and we think better.
